Vinayagar Agaval - The description of Truth

First of all, wish everyone a Happy Ganesh Chathurthi, may Lord Ganesha remove all obstacles and fulfil the dreams of all _/\_

In this article, we are going to look at the description of truth in a holy verse Vinayagar Agaval sung by a woman saint and poet Avayar and feel it is being sung during her salvation and the encounter with truth by the grace of Lord Ganesha.

The verse begins by describing the name and form of Lord Ganesha, and slowly moves us into requesting salvation of the soul at the beginning part. And as the song goes on, the author feels the poet had the visions of the truth expressed.

Here we are going to take in some key some snippets in the song on the expression of truth by beginning with the background. Please note, the author is not a scholar or a proper translator, but one tries to interpret this beauty and put in some language that he knows. Apologies for any improper translation. Again pointing to J Krishnamurti, 'The description is not the described'.

Starting line :

And it goes on with the expressions of the form of Lord Ganesha and the prayers for the salvation of soul begins by:

which translates to :

Please shower the grace on me as a mother, by getting the rid of the illusion of this birth cycle. Allow me to let the true nature of the panchatara mantra 'Om Namasivaya' get into my heart. And some lines go on after this.

Then comes the part of beyond the five senses, beyond the two deeds bad and good (இருவினையும்) , 9 outward openinings in the body and the comes the awakening of Kundalini energy from the Mooladara chakra by the dissolution of self. And awareness of the six facets of the physical body (சண்முக தூலமும்), emptiness of the mind with absolute quietness (வாக்கும் மனமும் இல்லா மனோலயம் தேக்கியே என்றன் தெளிவித்து).

(Means to control five senses)

(Means to go beyond two deeds)

(This is the point at which the poet goes beyond the trapping of five senses)

மூலா தாரத்தின் மூண்டெழு கனலைக் (awakening of kundalini energy begins here)

தேக்கியே யென்றன் சிந்தை தெளிவித்(து) (the absolute quietness of the mind comes into being)

அல்லல் களைந்தே அருள்வழி காட்டிச் (getting rid of all miseries and the being of endless and eternal joy)

The next few lines the expression of truth comes into being. Here the poet's description of truth in the song comes into being. She starts by the beginning with the realisation of the meaning of the actual sound (சதாசிவம்) and visions of the heart, anadhaka chakra (சிவலிங்கம் காட்டி). And she expresses truth as the smallest of the smallest (அணுவிற்கு அணுவாய்) and also the farthest of the farthest (அப்பாலுக்கு அப்பாலாய்).

(The smallest of the smallest and the farthest of the farthest).

கணுமுற்றி நின்ற கரும்புள்ளே காட்டி (the meeting point , the node)

She then ends the song by thanking and surrendering Lord Ganesha, for the visions of truth and realisation of the soul.

And there similar notions in Sivapuranam sung by Manikkavasagar, let us see a few key lines of expression of truth from it. The writer has got a chance to come across some lines in Kandar Kalivenba and some lines in Thirupughazh, also this gives a feeling that in all religious works across religions there could be this depth of expression of truth, but at times we are caught at the surface may be.

Now let us see the lines in Sivapuranam. Sivapuranam also begins by thanking and describing Lord Shiva. And then similarly the part at which the poet goes beyond the senses and the expression of truth comes into being.

And then the poet, also counted as one among the four key proponents of Shaivic tradition, Manikkavasagar goes into the birth cycles and surrenders Lord Shiva. As in Vinayagar agaval, we are seeing only the key snippets on the expression of truth, as each word in these songs have a profound meaning. It is priceless.

எல்லாப் பிறப்பும் பிறந்திளைத்தேன் எம்பெருமான் (all cycles of birth)

(complete surrender to the feet of God)

Here the poet tells us about the trapping of the five senses and the mind.

கலந்த அன்பு ஆகிக் கசிந்து உள் உருகும் (dissolution of this attached mind by means of absolute love)

In all songs of Thiruvasagam, Manikkavasagar portrays him as dog who surrenders, then what shall this writer say, a dog that doesn't know anything 🙈.

நாயிற் கடையாய்க் கிடந்த அடியேற்குத் (as a dog who surrenders)

(portrays Lord Shiva as like mother with endless compassion and a sacred light)

Now the expression of truth begins in the song, he starts by expressing that everywhere the eternal is present.

யாவையுமாய் அல்லையுமாய் (everything, everywhere)

தோன்றாப் பெருமையனே (the light, the dark and the never born)

And then the comes the deepest expression, the eternal which has no beginning, no middle and no end, who has showered grace on the poet (Manikkavasagar) to see the visions of truth.

The poet ends this song by surrendering Lord Shiva and mentioning everyone who sings this song understanding the meaning of it and surrenders shall attain salvation and put an end to this cycle of rebirths.

My memories with MS Dhoni

My memories with MS Dhoni : In December 2004, during a half yearly holidays in my high school he came in as a fashionable young wicket keeper, had seen many specialist keepers come and go in that period such as Parthiv Patel, DK, Ajay Ratra, Deep Dasgupta, so was not having any awe in him and getting a run out in hurried manner wasn't an impressive first showing. Was ignorant of the facts behind then, that he came from 3 centuries with India A in Kenya. Slowly as the days progressed, one rainy noon on the summer of April 2005, came back from an Annual exam to see India scoring more than 300 runs in the ODI against Pakistan in Vizag, from the scorecard saw that there was a change in batting order with MS Dhoni at 3 scoring 148 runs at a quick pace, but even then didn't have an awe in him. Days progressed through 2005, near a Deepavali day I was having a holiday, there was an ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka, the series was already decided with India had won it comfortably al

Transformation of data and analytics with information technology

The world we are in is driven by data. In other words, Data has been the backbone behind this transformation with technology. In the early days, trade was driven purely by commodity exchange for which the data was captured in numerics. Later, after the invention of coins and subsequently printed money the idea of market expanded with the printed money being able to be a common currency. For this study, let us take the emergence of the United States' economy. From the advent of market economy starting 19th century, consequently there was a need for a banking system and public investment through stock markets and US had higher flow of goods and services, enabling a larger consumer base which meant the data was saved in paper and pen. This resulted in a need to store this data better, which the technology enablers started doing throughout the 20th century. So for this it needed to be stored in servers for there was a visual input and output needed. This enabled the pursu

India's Economy - Thinking through the Journey and the Road Ahead

What comes into our mind when we first hear the word 'India'? Diversity? More than 1000 year old monuments? A land of wisdom? Crowded places? The skyscrapers, fast highways may come as the last pictures in one's memory. India has always been a great place for pilgrimages wherein people come in the quest to understand the true meaning of the life that has been given to them. People of India come from the ethnicity of saving and trying to live a life with contentment. But this contentment has been slowly fading in the age of consumerism. Let us see the journey of India economy and its chances of blooming in the future. The Journey: Years 1947 to 1990 :  After Independence, India had adapted the socialist and protectionist principles mainly assuming that adapting capitalism would be letting something similar to East Indian Company through the back door after attaining independence. So the state was keen to keep all the powers and licenses of businesses under its co
